Chypres in perfumery:
Chypres are one of the 6 original families (Floral, Hesperidia, Woody, Oriental, Fern, Chypre) according to the SFP (Société Française des Parfumeurs).
This trend is not new. A bit like the image we have of ferns and Colognes, a bit old-fashioned. Yet the most emblematic perfumes in the world of perfumery are often chypres.
Its essential components: Bergamot, Rose, Jasmine, Patchouli and "tree moss" notes. Animal, woody or resinous notes can be added to accentuate the fragrance's base.
Oak Moss, used in the old chypres, is now banned by IFRA and most of these perfumes have had to be reformulated.
Nowadays, chypre has been given a new lease of life, with more contemporary, modern fragrances, twisted with more unusual facets (green, fruity, fresh floral...).
