Perfume has been a key element of beauty and fashion for centuries. But did you know that your choice can also be influenced by the seasons? The perfumes we wear in winter are often very different from the ones we wear in summer. In this article, we explore how the seasons influence the choice of a perfume, and why you don't have to follow the rules.
Round 1: choosing your perfume
Lots of people have THEIR favorite perfume and stay as loyal to it as grandma and grandpa after 60 years of marriage. Others are very versatile and love being surprised by new releases.
In this second category, some people choose according to the season. At Versatile, we'd rather not associate our perfumes with seasons, as it could influence your choices. We prefer to let you adopt them based on the scent and the moment!
The pros
- Adapting to the environment: a fresh, light perfume can be more pleasant when it's hot.
- Adapting to your mood: a warm, spicy perfume can put you in the Christmas spirit during the winter.
- Following trends: perfumes are often launched according to the seasons.
The cons
- Limiting your choice: if you only choose based on the season, you'll miss out on lots of perfumes.
- Personal incompatibility: a "seasonal" perfume may not suit your tastes or your skin.
- Forgetting your preferences: by always following the season, you may end up choosing a perfume that doesn't feel like you.
In the end, your perfume should match your tastes first and foremost. If a "seasonal" perfume appeals to you, go for it! If not, explore beyond seasonal norms to find your ideal perfume.

Round 2: perfumes and seasonal clichés
Just like gender clichés ("flowers for women, woods for men"), the seasons have their own! We often associate fresh and light perfumes with summer, and warm and powerful perfumes with winter.
When it comes to buying habits, summer calls for refreshing scents, and winter for gourmand and ambery ones (we need comfort and character). A phenomenon deeply rooted in our culture.
A quick recap of trending scents by season:
- 🌱 Spring: fruity, aromatic and green notes
- 🥭 Summer: floral, powdery, citrus and sweet notes
- 🪵 Fall: woody and leathery notes
- ☕️ Winter: ambery, spicy and gourmand notes
These clichés aren't strict rules: you can wear any perfume at any time of year. Some notes simply pair better with certain seasons or occasions.
Round 3: do you really have to follow the rules?
No, don't panic! Perfume is still a matter of taste. If you love green, fresh perfumes like Dimanche Flemme, or if you've found the scent that's right for you, don't change a thing!
And let's be honest, it's also a question of mood. On a detox Sunday, you're not going to wear a very powerful perfume (let's be realistic).
