Roll-on or spray: what's the difference?
La Versateam
Roll-on or spray? We get asked every day. Spoiler: it's not about size. It's about how you wear it. One sits on your skin, the other fills the air around you. Here's the whole story, no jargon.
Two ways to wear it, not two sizes
You might think the spray is just the big version of the roll-on. Nope. They're two ways of wearing a perfume, with two different intentions.
- The roll-on goes straight onto your skin. It stays close to you. It's intimate.
- The spray mists all around you. It projects. It's the sillage, the trail you leave behind.
Same scent to start with, two experiences. A bit like an espresso and a latte: same beans, different moment.
Oil or alcohol: what really changes
The real difference is hidden in the base, the liquid that carries the perfume.
In a Versatile roll-on, the base is a plant oil: sweet almond and wheat germ. Not a drop of alcohol. Oil evaporates slowly and clings to the skin. The perfume stays close to your body, softly, for a long time. It rounds out, it melts in. A bubble all your own.
In a Versatile spray, the base is organic wheat alcohol. Alcohol evaporates quickly and carries the molecules into the air. The result: a brighter, airier perfume that gets noticed. The kind that makes the next table over ask, “What are you wearing?”
Neither one is a cut-price version of the other. The roll-on is all about closeness. The spray is all about presence.
Roll-on vs. spray: the showdown
| Roll-on | Spray | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Plant oil, alcohol-free | Organic wheat alcohol |
| Concentration | 30 to 38% (extraits de parfum), 20% (eaux de parfum) | 25% |
| Size | 15ml | 30ml |
| Diffusion | Close to the skin | A scent trail around you |
| Feel | Rounded, soft, melting | Bright, airy, far-reaching |
| Ideal for | Everyday wear, me-time | Drinks, dates, nights out |
When should you choose the roll-on?
- You like subtle perfumes: getting noticed by the right people, not by the whole room.
- Your skin tends to feel tight or you avoid perfumes that sting: since it's alcohol-free, the roll-on won't dry out your skin.
- You're always on the move: 15ml fits in a pocket, doesn't spill and goes in your carry-on.
- You want it to last: a 15ml roll-on lasts 4 to 6 months with one or two applications a day. Not a drop wasted in the air.
When should you choose the spray?
- You want sillage: a gourmand trail that follows you and turns heads.
- You like to scent your hair or your clothes: the spray goes everywhere in a single spritz.
- It's for a shared moment: drinks that turn into a whole evening, a date, a night that's just getting started.
And, as always, no 100ml bottle that won't fit anywhere. 30ml is just the right amount. Turns out size does matter after all.
Why not both?
It's our favorite trick. First apply the roll-on to your wrists and neck, let it melt in, then mist the spray over it. The oil anchors the perfume to your skin, the alcohol projects it. You get intimacy and sillage at the same time. We tell you all about it in our guide to perfume layering.

FAQ
Does the roll-on wear off faster than the spray?
No. It just lasts differently. The roll-on stays closer to the skin, but it lasts all day because the oil slows down evaporation. The spray smells stronger and carries further, especially in the first few hours.
Does it smell the same in roll-on and spray?
It's the same recipe, but not the same result. Oil rounds things out and softens them, while alcohol makes the opening brighter and fizzier. In fact, lots of our customers love switching between the two depending on the moment.
Can I take a roll-on on a plane?
Yes. At 15ml, it fits easily in your carry-on liquids bag. So does the 30ml spray.
